US Open of Surfing

I found the time in a busy weekend to venture down to the Huntington Beach Pier...well me and 500,000 others. Ok I don't know how many people were there but I heard that number being tossed around. I try to shoot this surfing competition every year. And every year I find out that my 100-400L lens is just not long enough. Ugh... But I managed to to get some images that I think are worth keeping. Here's a few.

The surf was actually huge for a nice change. Usually Huntington is flat. This weekend we were seeing waves as big as 10-12 feet.

Here is one of those monster waves being braved by the one and only Kelly Slater.

A Kelly Slater wipeout.

These next ones are of Brett Simpson who ended up winning the $100,000 fronted by Hurley.

Back in town...

I am back from an awesome backpacking trip in the Eastern Sierras. I had a blast, except for when a bear tried to steal our food on the last night. We started out near Mammoth and did about a 20 mile loop through Shadow Creek and up to Garnett and Thousand Island lake out to June Lake. We saw some amazing scenery.

If you are planning something similar make sure to take your bug spray!

Talk about God's country though... Here's a few images...

This is Shadow creek. We camped above it the first night.

Here is the view above our camp at Garnett Lake. Notice the full Moon setting above Banner Peak at sunrise.

This is the result of the full moon rising above our camp. It lit up the trees like headlights.

Here is what the moon looked like...

This is Banner Peak and Thousand Island Lake at sunset.

Here it is again at sunrise.

Outta here...

I'm hitting the trails Monday morning. Backpacking in the Eastern Sierras for 6 days! I don't know what's keeping me up more - the excitement of going or the notion of being eaten by a bear... Anyhow I'm stoked! I'm sure I'll have plenty to post in a couple weeks.
